College and Employer Delighted with their Apprentice of the Year

$

0

Somerset’s Apprentice of the Year (Intermediate category) is seventeen year old Oliver Baker, who lives in Shepton Mallet, works at The George Inn, Croscombe, and trains with Strode College in Street.

Oliver, a former pupil of Whitsone School, works as an assistant to the chef and owners of the CAMRA and Good Pub Guide award-winning George Inn. He helps with food preparation and service in the restaurant and works hard to maintain the high standards required to be successful in the food and hospitality industry.

Additional training and support for his apprenticeship is provided by Strode College - Hospitality and Catering is one of many apprenticeships schemes supported by the college.

Oliver first worked at The George Inn on a work experience placement while studying for his Level 2 Diploma in Hospitality and Catering. The owners were so impressed with Oliver that they decided to employ him as an apprentice. He has made outstanding progress in the role, culminating in this award which recognises his hard work and achievements.

Strode College Apprenticeship Manager, Cheryl Macriner, said: “Oliver is so positive and he is always looking to stretch and challenge himself. His employers really appreciate his work ethic, skills and teamwork in the kitchen, and the enthusiastic contribution he has made to the business - this has led to new recipes, greater choice and revamped menus, which has helped increase public interest and customer numbers.”

Oliver has now completed his intermediate apprenticeship and progressed to the advanced apprentice in Catering and Professional Cookery. Oliver’s ultimate goal is to one day run his own place, but in the near future he’s very happy to progress at George Inn.

Strode College currently has 20 apprenticeship vacancies in Somerset. If you are interested in becoming an apprentice, or if you are thinking of employing and apprentice, visit the Strode College website to find out more: www.strode-college.ac.uk or call the Strode apprenticeship team: 01458 844 553.

We are committed to helping all of our students reach their full potential both at college and in the future.

We help them prepare for future study and careers through specialist support and guidance. We encourage them to focus on their career goals; we advise them on the range of opportunities available to them for further study, training and employment; and we help them develop the skills and attributes they will need to make the most of those opportunities so that they can achieve their career goals.

Progress to university

Studying at university is a great way to further develop knowledge and skills that will, ultimately, lead to a successful career with great prospects.

Josh TeasdaleSpecialist A Levels secure places at Oxford

Josh Teasdale and Caitlin Tilt made the right choice when they decided to study A Levels at Strode College and now they’re on their way to Oxford University to pursue their ambitions.

At Strode they were able to study the specialist subjects they needed to gain a place at this prestigious university.

Josh, who is studying History, Art History and English Literature at Strode and has a particular interest in architecture, will be studying History at Oxford University. Caitlin will be studying Archaeology and Anthropology at Oxford; she was able to study Archaeology at Strode alongside her other A Level subjects English Literature and History.

Oxford - Caitlin TiltOur advanced level students are 13% more likely to get a place at university than the national average. In 2013, most of our A Level students went on to university, with 35% gaining places at Russell Group universities. Other students progress to specialist courses at universities across the country and our own high quality university-level courses. Most students gain their first choice university and our Strode Aspire programme provides intellectually stretching opportunities and support with applying to the best universities.

Progress to employment

Many of our students progress into employment, self-employment and apprenticeships in a diverse range of careers linked to their vocational course.

All students have access to careers advice and support. We organise careers education talks to help students become more effective and independent in their careers search, a valuable lifelong skill. These talks focus on topics such as work experience, job searching, speculative job hunting and networking. We also run job clubs to develop interview techniques and effective CV writing.

Two Strode students helped take the South West team to victory at the recently held British Colleges Sport National Championships, which is the longest running student competition and one of the largest annual sporting events in the UK.

Jenny Naylor, who’s 18, from Wincanton and formerly studied at King Arthur’s School, and Jake Krige, also 18, from Crewkerne and who previously attended Wadham Community School, are both currently studying A levels at Strode including Physical Education.

The Wilkinson Sword, which is given to the region with the most points accumulated overall, was won comfortably by the South West team this year, with 36 points separating them and the South East who took second place.

Jenny won the South West BCS Regional Badminton Championships (singles) in November last year before going on to represent the South West badminton team at the BCS National Championships.

Jake represented the South West team in trampolining. The team went on to achieve a silver medal overall at the event.

The championships, which were held at Bath University on 4th – 6th April this year, saw around 1700 students from colleges across England, Scotland and Wales compete. Other colleges in the South West Team are Bicton, Bridgwater, Cornwall, Exeter, Petroc, Richard Huish, SGS, Somerset, South Devon, Truro & Penwith, Weston and Yeovil.

Watching Award Winning Films in Berlin

Where better to watch and appreciate a good film than at a film festival and what if you’re watching award winning films and the film festival is in Berlin?

A group of Strode College A Level Film Studies students got the chance to do just that recently when they visited the celebrated `Berlinale` - the Berlin Film Festival.

They watched eight films in four days and also found time to explore the city’s cultural and historic sights.

Strode’s Film Studies teacher Ben Boydell organised the visit; he said: “We saw a great range of films in Berlin, including two that won `Bear` awards. By studying a wide range of films our students develop their skills of observation, analysis and reflection and this deepens their understanding and appreciation of film. Film Studies is a valuable subject for students who are interested in media and communication or those studying English Literature. Our visit to Berlin was really enjoyable and it has greatly enhanced our students learning.”

Master Class from Music Technology Royalty

Fifty Music Technology students had a fantastic and inspiring day when music producers and other industry professionals joined them for a day of production demonstrations and talks.

The highlight of the day was a music recording and mixing master class with Paul White and Hugh Robjohns from Sound on Sound magazine, which is widely celebrated as the fountain of all knowledge for music producers. Fresh from the international 'Musikmesse' in Frankfurt, they answered questions and gave students some great tips on how to make better music.

Adrian Smith, Strode’s BTEC Music Technology teacher and course manager said: “We were all very excited having Paul and Hugh visit - they are music technology royalty! We bumped into Paul when we visited the UK Music Production show at the end of last year; he was very interested in sharing his knowledge with our students so we arranged the visit. There was a great buzz in the room and our students learnt a lot.”

Music producer and former Strode student Angus Rankine, aka 'Anugoo', also gave the students some production tips and tricks using a range of software plugins and a hardware synthesizer. After Strode Angus went on to study music production with Hedflux, one of the big names in psychedelic bass music and he has since had commercial releases on Broken Records.

Current Strode students also got the chance to show off their skills, with Archie Burlton, aka 'Dharmonk', showing the audience how to use a vinyl deck and Akai MPC sampler to create and edit beats. Archie is in the final year of his BTEC Extended Diploma in Music Technology and he will be taking his hip hop production workshop out to local schools.

A number of former Strode students took time out of work and university to take part in the music production day, including: Daniel Hayes, who is in a successful band with deals in Europe and the USA; Shelly Peters, who was able to ask the Sound on Sound producers questions relating to her dissertation; and Josh Gray, who is currently studying Creative Music Technology at Bath Spa University.

Students Meet Famous Psychologist

Forty A Level Psychology students met the famous psychologist and author of the renowned Stanford Prison study, Dr Philip Zimbardo, when they attended a series of talks from famous psychologists in London recently.

In 1971, Dr Zimbardo, with the help of his wife and other researchers, conducted a piece of research in the basement of Stanford University that would change the face of social psychology forever.

He wanted to answer the question: 'what happens when you put good people in an evil place?' To do this he gave participants the role of either prisoner or guard. The experiment, which was supposed to last for two weeks, was stopped after only five days by Dr Zimbaro's wife because of the horrific treatment Dr Zimbardo and other 'guards' were inflicting on those taking the role of 'prisoners'.

Following this study Dr Zimbardo conducted research into `evil` and he is now studying acts of heroism.

Strode’s Psychology teacher and subject leader, Charlotte Hide, said: “The students had a fantastic experience at the conference - they found the day thought-provoking and inspiring. They said that hearing Zimbardo talk about his study helped them develop a greater understanding that just isn’t possible from websites and documentaries. They were also were delighted to come away with signed books and photographs with such a prominent researcher in psychology.”

Strode College in Street celebrated the outstanding progress and performance of twenty nine students from across Somerset at an awards evening held in Strode Theatre this week.

The awards recognised the hard work and achievements of students who completed a wide range of courses at the college last year, including A Levels, vocational qualifications, higher education qualifications, apprenticeships and courses for adults.

An audience of over 350 family, friends and staff heard how each student had worked hard to achieve their goals, showing great commitment to their studies, a tremendous work ethic and an admirable attitude to learning and life.

James Staniforth, Principal of Strode College said: “Our awards evening is a fantastic opportunity to congratulate some of our most outstanding students for their achievements and to catch up with them and hear what they are doing now. It is also a great opportunity to celebrate the high quality and commitment of our teachers who supported these students.

“At Strode we are determined to help people achieve their potential, academically and personally, so that they can progress in their goals for further study and successful careers. We provide quality learning opportunities for so many people, mostly students aged 16 to 18, but we also teach courses for other ages, levels, abilities and interests. Tonight’s awards highlight the achievements of 29 of the 1500 students who enjoy learning with us each year – we value all of them and take great delight in their success.”

In 2013 Strode College equalled its best ever results for advanced level 16-18 education, significantly above national benchmarks. The 2014 league tables show that Strode is the best school or college in Somerset for maximising students’ potential at A Level and the best college in Somerset for adding value for advanced vocational courses. Strode is in the top 6% of institutions nationally for maximising students potential by adding value at A Level and for BTEC vocational courses.

Strode College is currently accepting applications for the following courses which begin in September 2014: A Levels, vocational qualifications at level 2 and 3, HNDs, Foundation Degrees and higher level professional qualifications. Students at Strode College once again hosted their annual talent show in Strode Theatre, raising funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT), in memory of former student Sam MacDonald. Sam was studying Music Technology at the college when he died of cancer in 2007.

Eight acts, including solo artists, duos and contemporary dancers all battled it out for their name on the trophy and a cash prize. This year’s judges were Strode's Principal, James Staniforth, Strode Theatre’s manager Liz Leyshon and ex-television producer Jacinta Peel, who commented, "It’s really great that the students want to perform live; it’s the essence of success in this business."

First place went to duo Oli Kirkham, from Montacute and Connor Crabb (top), from Yeovil who are both studying Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music. The original track, named ‘Breaking Down’, was a unanimous choice for the judges and featured Connor on guitar and Oli, who wrote the piece, played Tenori-On and MikroKorg synthesizers which produced a stand-out and very up-to-the-minute sound.

Ben Tubridy  Jade Jackson

Runner up this year was Ben Tubridy (above, left) from Babcary, who is also studying Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music and who gave a faultless performance of Christina Perri’s ‘Human’. In third place was Jade Jackson (above, right) who is studying Level 3 Performing Arts and who delivered a stunning piece of contemporary dance to Ron Pope’s ‘A Drop in the Ocean’.

The stage manager for the show this year was Harry Roberts from Mark College and the comperes, Andy Jones from Ansford and Matt Blake, from Shepton succeeded in keeping the audience warm in between acts with their puns and anecdotes. They are all studying Level 3 Performing Arts at Strode.

Around seven young people aged between 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK. The TCT tries to make sure that every teenager with cancer gets positive support and experiences. They run teenage cancer units in hospitals, providing support and counselling for teenagers and their families and they arrange events and activities where teenagers can meet, share experiences and have fun. Strode College has announced its new programme of courses for adults and, with a wealth of opportunities available, catering for a wide range of interests and abilities, this is a good time to think about what you could gain from signing up for a course as an adult.

You might want to try something for your personal enjoyment such as pottery, painting, photography or upholstery; you could learn a language or take up acoustic guitar; or you can find out about philosophy, art or world cinema.

You could improve your career prospects by developing a skill or taking a job-related course, for example in accountancy, child care, counselling, English, engineering, food hygiene, hair and beauty, management, maths or teaching.

And, there are many computer and IT courses available for all abilities, including absolute beginner’s courses such as how to use e-mail or the internet, and courses for more experienced users leading to qualifications.

James Staniforth, Principal of Strode College said: “Leaving school, college or work doesn’t mean you have to stop learning. There are many good reasons to sign up for a course as an adult; learning can have really positive effects on people’s social, personal and professional lives. Last year around 3000 adults took part-time courses at Strode, showing how important adult learning is for many people in our community. I am delighted that we are able to share our excellent facilities and expert teachers with the local community.”

Strode’s courses for adults run at different times and dates throughout the year starting from September 2014. You can find out more by visiting the college website or request a 'Courses for Adults' brochure: 01458 844400.

If you want to find out more about Strode’s courses for adults, school leavers and employers, visit the College Open Evening on Wednesday 11 June, 6-8pm; pre-register or turn up on the night.

Thirty five A Level Law and Government & Politics students ventured to the capital recently to visit Parliament, the Supreme Court, the Royal Courts of Justice and the Old Bailey.

Tours around these key institutions and meetings with senior staff and officials helped the students to understand the theory and practice of Law and Government & Politics in the UK.  Those who are going on to study Law or Politics at university found the visit helped them to confirm their future study and career plans.

Strode’s Law teacher Liz Skinner and Government & Politics teacher Stephen Page, praised the students for their enthusiasm during the busy two days in London.

The creative arts are thriving at Strode College with students producing some outstanding, imaginative and technically accomplished work. This work can now be enjoyed by the public at the College’s 'End of Year Arts Show' which is open between 9.30am and 4.00pm, weekdays until Wednesday 18 June; and open until 8pm on Wednesday 11 June during the college’s Open Evening.

The show, which celebrates the work of 140 creative art and design students, opened on Monday (11 June) with a private view and an awards evening.

Six students were honoured for their outstanding achievements in painting and drawing, sculpture, graphics, textiles, photography, animation, film and video. They received a certificate and a cheque, and the College has bought a piece of their work to add to the 'Strode Collection'. (See list of winners below and photos of work attached.)

Strode’s extensive art and design facilities have been turned into a variety of gallery spaces to display the work professionally and to great effect, including large open gallery spaces and smaller more intimate studio galleries. Work is also exhibited in Strode Theatre. Maps are available from the College reception.

James Staniforth, Principal of Strode College said: “Our End of Year Arts Show is always a highlight for the college; this is a truly exciting and inspiring collection of work, full of originality and technical skill, across a wide range of creative courses.

“Our students achieve at an exceptionally high standard, with 30% progressing to the Russell Group of universities. Our arts and media students consistently achieve at these outstanding levels and win places at some of the country’s top specialist institutions for arts and media, including Goldsmiths, University of London; University of the Arts, London - Central St Martins; University College Falmouth; and the University of Winchester. I am extremely proud of the students and of our excellent teachers who have inspired and guided them.“

Petrina Rochester, Head of Art and Design at Strode said: “The End of Year Show generates great excitement and energy around college as students and staff work together to create something special. It is also a time for reflection as we review work; think about how far our students have come and how far they will go in the future. Our students have produced some outstanding work, much of which rivals that of specialist art colleges and many university level institutions. We are delighted to be able to showcase their talent, skill and creativity in this way.”

Students exhibiting will be completing courses this summer in A level Art, Design Technology, Graphics, Textiles and Photography, Level 3 Extended Diploma Art and Design, Level 2 Diploma Art and Design and Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.

After achieving 100% pass rate on their Level 2 Beauty Therapy course, our students enjoyed relaxing at Thermae Bath Spa recently when they visited for a careers talk and a tour of the facilities. The students, who had never visited a spa before, were very impressed with the relaxing environment and some are now considering working in a spa in the future when they complete their Level 3 Beauty Therapy course.

A group of children from Chernobyl visited Strode College this week during their trip to Somerset which has been organised by the Wells based charity Children of Chernobyl Fund.

The boys enjoyed a range of sports with Strode Sports coaches, including football and badminton, while the girls got their hair and nails done in the college beauty salon and tried out some hair styling techniques on each other under the guidance of Strode’s hair tutors.

John Price from the charity said: “Thanks so much for organising activities for the children - they had a great time. Three cheers to Strode College.”

Apprentice chef fundraising for St Margaret's Hospice

February might seem a long way off for most of us, but it's very much at the forefront of Apprentice Chef Megan O'Callaghan's mind – she will be setting sail across the Atlantic Ocean on 28 February to raise funds for St Margaret's Hospice.

Megan who lives in Wincanton, works as an Apprentice Chef at the Montague Inn (Wincanton) and trains at Strode College (Intermediate Apprenticeship Professional Cookery).  Her 21 day voyage will cover 2140 nautical miles across the Atlantic before coming to an end in the Azores.

Megan is a great supporter of St Margaret's Hopsice.  She said: "My auntie works at St Margaret's Hospice and I think it's a nice place where people can die in peace. I watched my grandma deteriorate and die within three days of being rushed into hospital and I really wish that she could have had a choice to die in a more peaceful place. I feel very strongly about St Margaret's Hospice and think they are important for Somerset."
